A Clean Well Lighted Place Essay

The light washed over yet why is there only emptiness; the darkness seems to swallow me whole. “A Clean Well Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway is a story of two points of views on one’s life. The older know lessons that the younger don’t this leads to what we do and say to others.
We begin with the older waiter at a café; he is wise to not judge an old depressed man who likes to stay till three. He share’s a connection with the man because he thinks like the old man; they want to stay in the light and with company. He even knows that money doesn’t always bring happiness, well some young bloods might. The older waiter is kind to people and though he does gossip about his costumers he tries to understand their situation .I know this because he defends the things they do with reasons of why they do them. This is something that many will look over and then be blind to someone’s pain.
Now we have the young waiter, a crude, selfish, cowardly, shallow, frigid, insignificant person. He the money equals happiness and insults a deaf man, what he did is horribly rude you never insult someone no matter what their situation. I wonder why karma isn’t taking place I mean his doing all of the shallow things and yet nothing or nobody spites him. Other frigid things that he did was kick the old man out and said he should died, makes an opinion that states old people are useless, and cares only about going to sleep before three. This shows that the younger waiter isn’t wise and doesn’t even care for the situation a person can be in.
Now what is the connection to older and younger waiter, they polar opposites, which makes me wonder why they even get along when they work together at the café? The old man seems wiser and more understanding toward people in a bad situation and which it seems that the younger waiter would just spite them for no reason. Then there something else the older waiter like to stay in the light away from the dark while the younger waiter seems to be in the dark say things like he can drink at home or in a bar, something that seem crud and empty. From both points in seems to be unfair, one wise but missing so many things to enjoy and then one having so much but no wisdom to enjoy what they have.
Ernest Hemingway’s “A Clean Well Lighted Place” is a way to see a point from two different people on a life. The more you know the better you treat those in a wasted life well those without that knowledge make the lives worse. Why do we all seem to follow this rule is that all there is to life or is there a different road where we can have wisdom yet chariest the many things that we have.
